I know that in '93, the quad 4 was rated at 180 hp. In '94 it was rated at 175 hp and in 95, it was down to 170 hp.

I'm curious to know what they did to bring down the hp.

Was it a simple exhaust re-tuning? Chip programming? Different cam?

I'm asking because I have a chance to buy a '95 Beretta with a quad 4 and am thinking if it's something bolt on, I may just go ahead and get it then re-gain the lost hp.

Yeah, I know many believe the Beretta is crap, but I have decided to buy one anyways, either this one or another.

There were several versions of the Quad 4.

The LD2 was the low performance version, it had a different crank, intake manifold and camshaft profiles.

The LGO was the high performance version, it had more aggressive cams and required premium gas.

The W41 version was only found on the Oldsmobile Achieva SCX and had 190 HP, it a reprogramed ECU and even more aggressive cams than the LGO did.

Also the Quad 4 was not available in the Beretta in 1995. Either the car you're looking at isn't a 1995 or it just has the base 2.2L I4

You may want to reconsider the quad 4 engine, unless you're a good wrench or have money. It's prone to breakdown and hard to work on. I think the horse power reduction may have ben an example of 'paper tuning' where the manufacturer downgraded the power on paper only, b/c if I remember right, the HP stayed up on the more recently introduced Cavalier, and the Beretta was on it's way out
